Ok, really if you think about it, the two pieces of equipment you mentioned can be put on one plane so really you don't need to choose between the two.

You also need to specify on what type of plane you would be choosing one over the other on because the to pieces of equipment are used for different types of aircraft. The thrust vectoring is used on fighter aircraft and swept wings on supersonic bombers and fighter bombers with one exception the F-14.

Are you refering to Variable Sweep Wing or a swept wing, they are two diferent things.

Variable Sweep wing for example is the F-14 (like you said) or the B-1b or the F-111. A swept wing is just not a the angle of the wing design as opposed to a straigt wing. I am sure you knew all this just trying to get som clarification.

Well to answer your question all a variable sweep wing does is give the aircraft the availability to change between a high speed agility of a 'delta' wing design (swept back) and slow speed agility with wings swept forward. and also the f-14 variable sweep wing design let it fit a lot of air craft in the carriers.

I was answering the question as if he meant variable swept wings, which I should have clarified, sorry.

As for the author, please clarify as to what you mean by swept wings.

As you said there are different uses, the F-14 not only could save space by sweeping its wings back, but it gave it the ability to generate more lift when taking off from a carrier, which is very important, and then transform into a supersonic fighter-interceptor or fighter-bomber depending on the variant. The same with the B-1B and the F-111 because of the crafts heavy load it requires a lot of lift to take off, but it could then become a supersonic bomber.

Fixed Swept wing aircraft are not as versatile, obviously, and this type of wing is usually only seen in fighter-interceptor aircraft because of the requirement for high speeds. Not many aircraft have swept wings at least not true swept wing, some have hybrid swept wings. By this I mean they are shaped like a different type of wing, but are also swept back a bit.

well a thrust vectoring a-10 would be... interesting, but still not good against the likes of a Su-27

When you start another post make sure your more specific as you could have swept wing and thrust vectoring and in fact all aircraft with thrust vectoring have swept wings by the way do you mean swing wing not swept wing
