Message Number 13Date Posted: 05 February 2005, 10:30:24 AM Australia has 70+ f-18s, thing is none of these are based in New Zealand. Some of New Zealands old skyhawks used to be based in Australia. Also Australia is meant to be getting f35s when they come out. Why should New Zealand rely on Australia for core defence capability???

Message Number 15Date Posted: 06 February 2005, 7:02:13 PM I think it is kinda selfish how New Zealand relys on other countries. I think when Australia purchases its f35s New Zealand have a side order with it for 30 or so of them. Thats what New Zealand used to do about 20 years ago.

Message Number 16Date Posted: 10 February 2005, 6:29:57 PM I think its to little aircraft for Australia. 70 ? Ukraine has like 220 mig-29s and 70 su-27s....and it two times smaller than Australia.

Message Number 17Date Posted: 10 February 2005, 8:34:18 PM Australia also has f111. It apparently plans to get over 100 f35s and is considering whether to get an aircraft carrier to go with that.

Message Number 18Date Posted: 11 February 2005, 11:36:40 PM New Zealand doesn't need f-35's on any sort of fighter strike package for that matter. We are so isolated from everyone that the only people that could possibly attack us would be Australia. Also, and keep in mind that I am no expert on military operations, the only way that it would be efficient would be if we were to purchase tankers at the same time. But, it wouldnt be a bad idea to purchase an attack helicopter strike force such as the Eurocopter or even an Apache.

Message Number 19Date Posted: 12 February 2005, 7:37:08 PM Sounds like you are a New Zealander. I actually think the best thing to do with the military would be to give new orions to the navy. Get new hurcles, blackhawks and apaches for the army and not have an air force at all. Plus get a surface to surface missile for the frigates along with an anzac frigate. (this is would cost so much to do). I would also return the lavs and get a racked aarmoured personal carrier.
Even if we do end up getting an air strike force back its gonna cost a &*#% load coz we have to train pilots and engineers etc from scratch which is gonna coz heaps. Act, national and NZ first say they all want a air strike capability back.

Message Number 20Date Posted: 18 February 2005, 7:21:33 PM I think it should get su-37s.Su-37 has all features of a modern, attack fighter. It can carry 8 tons of any payload,it has great speed, great moneverability to protect it self in a dog fights against enemy aircraft and can fly long range missions. For own protection,I think the best would mig-31 M.The MiG-31M is a highly improved version of the original MiG-31. It has new IRST and phased-array radar to engage six targets at the same time. It is capable of carrying an improved version of the R-33 AAM the R-37.
I think it's better to buy Russain fighters. They are cheaper and can compitte with any other aircraft in the world.
