The A-10 probably wont be stable at super sonic speeds. But It really doesnt need to go that fast. Its 30mm Gatling Rotary cannon does the work for it! 100 rounds per seconds! ouch! It was designed around the gun, not the engines, which means it wasnt built for speed. Its strait edge wing provides more lift to get the A-10 in, out, and out of harms way.

Don't forget in most fighter/attack aircraft the engine is surrounded by fuel, That is why the A-10 is so tough it's motors are up and away from any fuel and can take a direct it with out any fire hazards (there are some but not near as many as a normal jet) and it can fly on one motor. Oh and don't forget the titanium 'bathtub' that the pilot sits in and it has the tightest turn radius out of any jet, minus the F-22 in the inventory.

if it had afterburners it could go mach 1+. but it would need a half decent airbrake. Canards and thrust vectors would be sweet...

That plane doesn't need any of that stuff it already turns tight enough. It is not supposed to be pretty, itis designed around a weapon, don't forget that. The 30 MM avenger cannon.
