Only one sr-71 is still in service, not with the AF but with NASA for high altitude/speed testing. As for the U2, well the dragon lady is still very much alive and kicking (don't fight with me on this one, I am an Egress (ejection systems)tech on her).

Yep, the SR-71 was retired from the USAF back in the mid/early 90's, but NASA took a few, and as oxusaf said, they have one that they still use.

I agree with the Dragon Lady part, though from what I understand, much intel is collected by sat's rather than aircraft.

Its very simple the sr71s more effective but the u2s much cheaper to use and it was the cost that was the killer of blackbird. However u2 is much cheaper to use so they kept it.

Actually, it was the fact that the 71 is very very old and the cost to maintain it, not the overall cost that put it in mothballs.

Well I can see the U2 still being used... you all have seen Fighter Pilot right? the IMAX movie? They used a U2 in it to keep an eye on the battle below. a U2 would be very helpful in high altitude recon if there is a hole in the SATINT (sattilite inteligence) system when one sat just went out of view and another can't see the same spot for several hours.

Don't base anything off of that movie, it was completely not how they do it at red flag.

yes i know but the use of a U2 in that manner still shows my point which is that a U2 can be used to ether A.) as a recon bird to fill the gap in the SATINT system or B.) to have a REALTIME uplink to an AWACS for a battle.

The SR being so fast and basically a space plane (I know that it isn't really a space plane) is great for penetrating high risk areas however the U2 is great for long loiter times and one of the cool things we use it for is locating IED's which saves a lot of lives.
